How to Change a Car Battery
Are you the DIY-minded driver? Changing a car battery is definitely something you can do. That said, it's important to follow proper safety procedures. Before beginning, ensure the vehicle is turned off and parked on a level surface. Gather the necessary tools, including safety gloves, safety glasses, a tool set, and a brush to help clean the connection terminals.
On most vehicles, the battery should be under the hood. Find the negative terminal and the positive terminals, which should be marked with a minus and plus sign, respectively. Disconnect the negative terminal first to prevent electrical shorts, then disconnect the positive terminal. You can then remove any securing brackets holding the battery in place and carefully remove your old battery. Batteries can be heavier than they look, so be ready to lift. Clean any corrosion from the connectors and battery tray before you put the new battery in.
Once the new battery's in place, secure it and, reconnect the terminals: starting with the positive terminal first and then the negative terminal. That should get it installed and ready for use. You can try turning on your car to see if it works. If you have questions? Give us a call. We're always happy to chat with our Douglas, WY and Rawlins-area drivers.
